Again we see and hear of examples of nursing still wearing their uniforms outside work. Read this article about nurses uniforms posing superbug risk

  Is there a reason why we still see nurses, care assistances and others wearing their healthcare uniforms outside the workplace ? Is it the employers fault for not providing enough uniforms or implementing a correct uniform policy ?

This applies not only to hospitals but to care homes, these superbugs can also be found there, as residents are admitted from hospitals, sometimes with this bug.

Nursing homes should seriously review their uniform policy and where needs be, they should increase their healthcare uniform quota. Too many are too tight when it comes to providing a sufficient number of uniforms sets to their staff. Even if they are not prepared to pay for these uniforms, they should insist on the correct number of sets of healthcare uniforms required by nursing staff to do their jobs in a correct manner.

When will they realise that a uniform is not an item which can be cut back on. Come on get it sorted and help elimate these superbugs. Provide your staff with enough uniforms PLEASE !!!

  I recently heard that some of our Northern Ireland hospitals have increased their uniform quota to 5 sets of uniforms per staff.

I just wonder how many uniform sets are issued in the private sector ? Are our care homes still issuing the bear minimum, like 1 uniform tunic for part time, and 2 uniform tunics for full time, after that buy your own ???

Healthcare Uniforms for New Belfast Nursing Agency.

I visited Lucas Love offices in Belfast around 6 weeks ago to discuss their healthcare uniform requirements, after a company which had got the business went out of business, and hence unable to supply. Through their internet searches for healthcare uniforms they came across Blue Autumn.

Nursing Uniforms - Nurses in Wales to Get New Uniform

News last month that Welsh nursing staff will soon be wearing identical uniforms caught our eye. 

Welsh Health Minister Edwina Hart is reported as saying,

"A new nationally-recognised uniform will be symbolic of the individual and the organisation.  It will not only convey identity, but also a reassurance to patients and relatives and a sense of solidarity and pride among staff themselves.

The new uniform will also be designed to reduce the risk of hospital infections spreading helping to meet our One Wales commitment to improve hospital cleanliness."

A working group set up by Ms Hart and comprising nursing staff and health representative bodies including the Royal College of Nursing, UNISON and the Royal College of Midwives recommended that the uniform would have the following elements:

• short-sleeved to maximise forearm washing culture
• side-button or zip opening to avoid pulling stained, contaminated or soiled uniforms over the head and face when changing
• able to withstand industrial, high temperature washing techniques
• impractical to wear outside the workplace
• available to all on a daily change basis with access to extra changes if required and
• separate colour distinctions for key staff grades

Generally speaking, this strikes us as all very sensible - but what on earth will a design which is "impractical to wear outside the workplace" look like?

The mind boggles... :)
